Kerry's 308 GTS Project
I thought my problems with the electric window switches were behind me once I replaced the flaky driver's one. However, as I was working on the passenger door installing the side mirror, I tried to lower the window and the switch didn't work. I was able to use the passenger window switch on the driver's side to get it down.
I figured that I had just loosened a wire when removing and re-installing the arm rest and door panel. But after looking at the wiring diagram, any loose wire would have prevented it from working from the driver's side switch. So I figured that I had another bad switch on my hands.
I found the old switch I had replaced for the driver's window and took it apart.
At least this isn't as complicated as the switches for the 330 GT. If you look closely, you can see the contacts that have been arcing. The upper left one in the switch and the left one of the two rockers.
The ones on the copper rocker pieces were cleaned with emery cloth. I used a small grinding bit on the Dremel to clean up the ones inside of the switch. I tried to remove the contacts, but they were designed to only be put in, not removed nicely. Once I had cleaned up the contacts, I put a little distributor grease where the plastic actuator rides and re-assembled it. A test with the ohm meter verified that the contacts were making good contact. Oh, I also reversed the copper rocker pieces so the good contact was mating with the old arced end inside the switch. That way, one half of the pair are effectively unused.
I put this switch in place of the passenger side one, individually moving each of the six wires to the respective terminal. The window now works fine using the cleaned up switch. Since I had everything out on the bench, I took apart the one I replaced and cleaned it up to. So now I have a spare ready to be popped in place as needed. Knowing my luck, I expect that the driver's side switch for the passenger (the only one not replaced yet) will stop working in the next month or two.
