Air Cleaner Refinishing

My air cleaner needed re-painting.  The paint was worn, blotchy and there were a couple of dents that needed attention.

The first thing was to remove the metal FISPA plate.  This must have been off at some other time as it was fastened by one screw rather than the original two rivets.  Then I took the top and base back to my neighbor's shop and spent a few hours bead blasting the old layers of paint off.

Then I removed several minor dents in the base and straightened the top where it has been dropped on the edge a couple of times.  The curved ends of the intake horns needed quite a bit of work.  One of the horns was also out of alignment so I carefully straightened it.

Then it was onto the priming and painting.  I used  Krylon Rust Tough Semi-Flat Black #9203.

Re-attaching the metal plate was the last task.  I used the rivets on Lowell Brown's air cleaner as a reference for size.  Then it was a matter of looking at some pictures to determine if the lettering faced towards the inside or outside of the top.  The consensus is that it faces the inside.

And finally, back on the car.

Now I just wish the rest of the engine compartment looked as nice.
