Kerry's 250 GT Pininfarina Coupe Restoration (1643GT)
The rear license plate frame fits onto the trunk lid and conforms to the curvature. It wasn't clear to me if there was supposed to be U-shaped rubber trim to keep the frame off of the paint or not. I fit some of the larger U-shaped rubber I had, but the frame was too thick so the sides didn't lay flat. After thinking for a while, I decided to put rubber spacers on each corner over the screws to hold the frame slightly away from the paint. The rubber also worked to hold the plastic Italian plate in place. After my first pass it was clear that I needed to custom fit each corner so the rubber would be even and work right. Here you can see where I marked the edge and how it came out after sanding off the excess rubber.
When all of the corners were done and the frame screwed down, there is just enough of a gap to prevent rubbing.
On my 330 GT, I was able to get the original Italian registration plate number so I could buy reproduction plates to match. However, when I checked with Marcel Massini, there is no record of the coupe having been serviced by Assistenza Clienti (customer service dept) in Modena, so no record of the original number. I do know that the first owner lived in Milan though. Marcel did tell me that the range of numbers for the MI province that were used in February 1960 when the car would have been registered was from MI 458000 to about MI 463000. So I decided to order historic custom Italian plates with MI 461643. The last four are the serial number of the coupe, 1643. I used the same place (licensesplates.tv) that I used for the 330 as I was satisfied with their quality and service.
