Wiring
Over the years, it looked like many mechanics had got their hands into the wiring. The fuse panel was a spaghetti rats nest of wiring.
You can see all of the extra wires with jumpers by passing fuses. There's also a relay missing at the lower left. One thing that I was pleasantly surprised at was that the owner's manual had an almost complete accurate wiring diagram.
Most of the electrical parts worked, but one short in a circuit that bypassed the fuse could easily start a fire. It took about 40 hours spent over a few weeks to straighten out everything. In practically all cases, the original wire was still there, tucked away with either the end clipped off or taped up. So it was just a matter of searching down each wire and getting it attached where it belonged. And, of course, removing the replacement wire.
In perusing the wiring diagram, I noticed a light and switch associated with the emergency brake. After looking in the car, I realized that the light was under the red button used to release the lever. It will flash when the emergency brake is applied and the ignition is on. This is to warn the driver to release the brake before driving off.
I recently helped Lowell Brown (8855) fix his emergency brake light. Click here to read about it.
One thing I would suggest for anybody with an older Ferrari. Remove each fuse and lightly sandpaper (fine or very fine grit) the ends of the fuse and the copper contacts in the fuse box. This alone will fix about 1/2 of the electric problems on an older Ferrari. This will only take about a half hour and will prevent future problems. The ends of these ceramic fuses have a tendency to corrode and then there will be intermittent contact problems. You should also check the fuse amperage compared to the chart in the owner's manual. You will probably find some of them to be the wrong value. These fuses are the same as used in older Volkswagens, so any auto parts store has them if you ask for VW fuses.
